Searching for Cancer cure should never end with October!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I am sure that there is not one person who does not know someone whose life has not been touched somehow by this awful illness called CANCER. Or the BIG ‘C’!. Here is a former club, high school, collage and now masters marathon coach/athlete who is a parent and an official and everyone who runs in NYC area know her, Mrs Zakia Haywood. Here is her story.

Zakia Haywood: Track official runs for Cancer Cure

YOU HAVE CANCER! Every 3 minutes someone receives this dreaded diagnosis. I’m committed to being part of the solution and have joined forces with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to start Project Courage: a personal tribute run to my father and dear friend. I can make a difference…one step at a time! Those 3 overwhelming, stinging words will fuel my steps along 3 iconic races in honor of those who battle daily, have succumbed and conquered cancer.

The wind beneath my wings as I take on the ultimate challenge of 3 marathons (and more) in one month. My dad would have been 70 years old this year. On the 5th anniversary of his passing, this year I will be running the Marine Corp Marathon inaugural 50k on 10/27. The TCS NYC Marathon on 11/3 will be exciting as I’ll be greeted by survivors in every borough and run alongside my high school coach.  Project Courage ends with the NYRR 60k on 11/17, a tough run covering 9 loops of Central Park. This crazy run is dedicated to my dear friend Michelle and my great uncle Neville. They truly believed in me more than I believe in myself, and would cheer me on through life’s challenges.

My steps will not be in vain. I’m asking for support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It takes more than one person to make up a team and generous donations will ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients. Be someone’s miracle and  help fund treatments that save lives every day; like immunotherapies that use a person’s own immune system to kill cancer.

Patients need these cures and their families need our support to help get us all closer to a world without cancer of any form.

Thank you, Zakia
